Travel Destinations in Karnataka

  • Bangalore: Capital of the Southern state of Karnataka, Bangalore today is Asia's fastest growing cosmopolitan city. It is home to some of the most high tech industries in India.   • Belur and Halebid: are two tiny but beautiful temple towns 16 km apart in the southern state of Karnataka. Once at the centre of a great empire ruled by Hoysalas in the 12th century, Belur and Halebid are heritage towns and are home to several exquisite temples which reveal the artistry of Indian sculptors and the mastery of the temple builders of yore.
  • Chikmagalur: Chikmagalur literally means "The town of the younger daughter" in the native Kannada language. The town is said to have been given as a dowry to the younger daughter of Rukmangada, the legendary chief of Sakrepatna and hence the name. As one can guess, there is indeed a town called Hiremagaluru which means "The town of the elder daughter" which is about 5 km from Chikmagalur city.
  • Hampi: was once a flourishing capital of the Vijayanagar Empire, is a very small village in the Northern Karnataka. Hampi exhibits the vast relics of the city of Vijaynagar, also known as the City of Victory. It was built as a showpiece of imperial magnificence. The main attraction in Hampi are the temples built by the Vijaynagar empire.
  • Madikeri: also known as Mercara, is a lush hill station in the Coorg region of Karnataka. Situated at a height of more than 1500 metres above sea level, the natural splendour of the town has made it famous as the 'Scotland of India'. Tributaries of the River Kaveri run through the town.
  • Mysore: Mysore is the erstwhile capital of Wodeyars, the rulers of Mysore state. Mysore has never failed to mesmerise the tourists with its quaint charm, rich heritage, magnificent palaces, beautifully laid-out gardens, imposing buildings, broad shady avenues and sacred temples. The charm leaves no one untouched.
  • Somnathpur: is a small village located in Mandya district of southern Karnataka near the Karnataka-Kerala border. The village is situated on the banks of river Cauvery and is about 30 kms from Srirangapatna town. Somnathpur is named after its founder Somnath, the chief commander of the Hoysala army.

  • Kumarakom: Kumarakom is a pictorial, unsoiled village. Thiru Anantha Puram, or the city of the Holy Anantha, is named after Ananthan, the cosmic serpent with a thousand heads, on whose coils Lord Mahavishnu reclines.

  • Hyderabad: is the capital city of the state of Andhra Pradesh of South India. Located on the Deccan Plateau, Hyderabad is the fifth largest city of India. Hyderabad has a rich Hyderabadi culture of its own, a blend of Persian and Telugu cultures, which flourished under the reign of the Qutab Shahis.
  • Tirupathi: Tirupati, situated at the Eastern Ghats' foothills, is an important pilgrimage centre of the state of Andhra Pradesh. It lies close to the Tirupati Temple, which is located in the hills of Tirumala. The temple attracts millions of devotees every year and is one of the most visited pilgrimage centres of the world.

  • Ooty: also known as Udhagamandalam is the "Queen of hill stations" and the capital of Nilgiris district. It is one of the most popular tourist resorts in India. Nilgiris means "Blue Mountains". It is a land of picturesque picnic spots. Used to be popular summer and weekend getaway for the Britishers during the colonial days.
  • Rameshwaram: is a holy region in Tamil Nadu region in southern India. It is one of the most renowned pilgrim places in the region. It is located on a beautiful island in the lower side of India and is separated by a small Pamban channel from Sri Lanka. Rameswaram is the holiest pilgrimage place for the Hindus.
